New Kadampa Tradition uses Google ads to defame the Dalai Lama

I was thinking that the New Kadampa Tradition (NKT) and their front organisation, Western Shugden Society (WSS), settled their Character assassination attack against the Dalai Lama. It’s not so.

Today someone sent me an email, that http://google.co.uk lists an ad to the NKT/WSS site falsedalailama.com when you type in the search word “Dalai Lama”. The site falsedalailama.com claims to “expose” “the dark side of the Dalai Lama”. It is anonymously (as always in NKT’s front organisations’ contexts) and it is hosted by http://www.enom.com.

The site falsedalailama.com promotes NKT’s renamed booklet – previously promoted under the title “A Great Deception” (which indeed was a fair title for the content of the booklet) – with the new title “The False Dalai Lama”. An anonymous review at GoodReads hits the nail on its head regarding its content and style:

Childishly written (“we wrote to the Dalai Lama for his side and he didn’t respond, so that proves he’s guilty” a paraphrase true to the book’s spirit), and mostly unsubstantiated “facts” (sometimes citations for works also produced by the same group as the book – notice the book doesn’t actually have an author.) I don’t think it is likely that EVERYTHING in the book is just made up, but it certainly can’t all be true either (the Dalai Lama, nor anyone else, could not possibly be Muslim, Communist AND Fascist as this volume breathlessly claims.)

I wish Kelsang Gyatso and NKT peace of mind: Learn to love your enemy. This approach brings you the best spiritual benefits. If you are looking for spiritual benefits, to love your enemy is the way:

All things have the nature of mind. Mind is the chief and takes the lead. If the mind is clear, whatever you do or say will bring happiness that will follow you like your shadow.

Yes, it is easy to slander someone anonymously, but it is also cowardly. However you wish to characterize this approach by the NKT, one thing is certain: it is the very antithesis of Dharma. What is it that the NKT is missing? An inability to love their “enemy.” Such an attitude condemns them to an unremitting state of hatred and suffering as the closing quote here so beautifully illustrates. How can one not have anything but compassion for those who take this path?

btw, can someone cite the source of the above quote?

  I am extremely sorry for Kelsang Gyatso, it is just sad to see the route he has taken, and the way how he misguides others.
  We have all gone that road I assume in past lives or in this life (as in my own case). Personally I am grateful that he taught me what I could become if I am not aware of my shadow sides of the ego. In that sense he is still a teacher to me, an extremely precious teacher who taught me something nobody else has taught me in that clarity.

I think the function of all this is to keep ‘disciples’ of Kelsang Gyatso away from the Dalai Lama. Once you realised how stunning his books are – comprehensive, with all the answers the NKT would never give you, so well explained, and covering all the schools of Tibetan Buddhism, then you don’t look back. I think the NKT has to maintain this pretence so as to preserve its hegemony for the students – how else? And it reminds me how ‘brainwashed’ I was in the NKT – it took me years to be able to approach the Dalai Lama’s works/videos, etc as I really did think he would be rubbish! I know people who left the NKT a long time ago who still won’t go near HHDL though – I’m so glad I became aware of how much influence the NKT had over me and made the effort! It’s such a relief to be out of the NKT community -and at the same time I have developed more distance from my experiences (due in no little measure to the Dalai Lama’s help!) and can see how there were advantages to living in an NKT community. Shame it happened at so much cost….

  Thank you Carol. As to what the function is, I don’t know. I rather think the anger is just driving them crazy. After they tried to reach out the public to “educate” them that they have a wrong image of the Dalai Lama while the NKT has found out “the truth” about him, and after they failed to incorporate their image of the Dalai Lama into the Wikipedia article about him, they might be still unsatisfied and impelled to still convince the world about “the truth” even if they have to pay money for it. Based on this view it feels rather desperate what they do …
  
  However, I agree to the amount of effective “brainwashing” the NKT has done to me and other NKT followers. It needs years to realize the qualities of the Dalai Lama and to understand that he is not a fake but a true genuine, deeply honest and compassionate & wise person. A deep distrust and a distortion of reality is the heritage of the NKT “brainwashings”, this is not easily left behind … True there are people who left NKT and still believe what they learned there about the Dalai Lama … they don’t question this propaganda nor do they take up the work to go through the facts and to re-investigate this topic …

I have learnt that we do not have enemies. The only enemy we have is ourselves, our refusal to accept reality is our biggest stumbling block on the path. The NKT, cannot accept HHDL, to do so would break their own illusion that they are the sole holders of the Dharma. Therefore they have to decry anything that threatens their “reality”. We need to have compassion for them, and the karma they accrue. His Holiness by not replying is expressing this. There are some very genuine practitioner’s within the NKT who are being brain washed, but until they are ready to see the reality they will not accept the truth. My compassion and prayers go out to them, but I also know that they will come to the true Dharma when conditions are right for each one of them. Perhaps there own Karma is playing out.. Therefore we should all show compassion, pray for them, and thank them for teaching us how illusion clouds reality. I am an ex NKT Ordainee and have recovered from my experience, I thank them for enabling me to have had the experience, without experiencing the lesser, how can one truly understand and appreciate the true Dharma?
May all sentient beings have the cause for peace and Happiness.

  I agree with you – almost. I am not sure if their karma is playing out; maybe from the pov of meeting NKT/KG. But they create also karma, and to slander a being is not good karma at all, to slander a Bodhisattva even worse (though it is said: “better to have a bad connection with a Bodhisattva than having no connection”.) There are also a lot who gave up Buddhism and religion completely after their encounter with NKT. Which I feel very sad for because from the pov that Buddhism is so rich and so much helpful if applied correctly, I see this as a great loss for them, a great loss of a great opportunity to transform the mind … How sad!
  
  You are right compassion is the way. I think my pointing out of the perceived faults of NKT is not very compassionate to them (unlike the silence of the Dalai Lama). However, the blog is not meant to attack NKT but to protect people from stepping into NKT or by supporting their getting out of it – if they wish so.

    A friend of mine just posted this denunciation of the doctrine of Karma on Facebook. I wonder if you have any comments on it? He also says that finding a way to deal with or express emotions that does not hurt others is a crucial part of becoming a properly socialised person and that this is not covered by ideas of karma or any scripture. Are there any to which I could refer him of which you know?
    
    “Karma is, was and always will be a fraud, pure and simple. In the beginning, karma only meant the proper performance of the rituals. And then came a power struggle between the priests and the warriors. At that time, the meaning of the word changed to a general guide to behavior and life. How did this happen? It was very simple. The priests could not out-power the warriors. The warriors could simply kill them and they did have a lot of fun disturbing the worship of the sacred cow’s holy behind. What happened next is pretty obvious, the priests came up with a new superstition to control the warriors, persuading them that if they did not do the right thing and keep the priests rich and happy they would reincarnate as insects, or worse, untouchables. And warriors, not being very bright, bought into it. And from there it grew and grew, kind of like a mental fungus.
    
    Anyway, this noxious concept was brought to the west by the Theosophists and they did it for a very specific and rather cynical reason. The Victorian age was beset by a problem. People were growing up and realizing that the notion of hell was pure superstitious rot and ignoring it, which terrified the do-gooders of that time. I mean think about it, they might go off and spend money, drink, have SEX! The world clearly needed a new superstition and karma seemed just right to fill the void. And they really got carried away with, coming up all kinds of strange formulae to figure out what the karmic price was for each action, and making total fools of themselves in the process and everyone else pretty much ignored them when they weren’t laughing their heads off, spending money, drinking and having sex.
    
    Anyway, it sort of lay fallow until the 1960s when the hippies and losers who would grow into the New Age grabbed onto it and spread it like the Black Death through the culture, because even with karma they could drink, spend money and have sex. But it is still nothing more than it was in the beginning, a tool of social control that only works on those stupid enough to buy into it. Of course they will try to come up with all manner of explanations of the thing, but their arguments are about the same value as the geography of the flat earth. The earth is not flat, the Pope is never infallible, virgins did not have babies two thousand years ago, there is no hell, there is no pixie dust and there is no karma.
    
    The important thing is not to buy into it. Treat it as the pious fraud that it is, promoted by sanctimonious fools who have nothing better to do than try to tell you how to live. Ignore karma and laugh at those who try to use it on you.”
    
    Quite a convincing argument I thought – is karma really just superstitious nonsense?

      All depends on how it is defined. The term is bandied about without much thought. But, no I don’t think of it as some sort of ‘cosmic accountancy’.

      The psychological way where one says in a non-violent manner (maybe with the motivation to show a mirror what is going on in you) for instance: “if you say this I feel deeply hurt” or “if you act like this I feel, that I get very angry” is perfectly suited to the Dharma practice in my opinion because: 1) you practice honesty 2) you practice self-introspection 3) you give the other person a fair opportunity to understand what his/her behavior makes with you 4) based on 1)-3) the other person is able to understand the situation better, to understand the effects of the own actions and compassion can arise. Also for oneself, there is no suppression of feelings but an open path/way to acknowledge inner responses without suppressing them or by increasing your clinging to it. I think this path without karma understanding works very well. If a method is an opponent to the fettering passions, it is Dharma according to the Kadampa way of looking at it:
      
      »What is the difference between Dharma and non-Dharma?« the teacher Drom[tönpa] was asked by Potowa.
      
      »If something is in opposition to fettering passions, it is Dharma. If it is not, it is not Dharma. If it does not accord with worldly people, it is Dharma. If it does accord, it is not Dharma. If it accords with the teachings of Buddha, it is Dharma. If it does not accord, it is not Dharma. If good follows, it is Dharma. If bad follows, it is not Dharma.«

      Dharma is not only what is in the books. You only need this method of communicating in a non-hurtful way your emotions to others if there is a need for it. If you have less negative emotions and if the mind is more trained and stable, those negative emotions come and go very quickly, there is no grasping to them. In such a situation there is no need to express them because if you want to start to express them, they are already gone 😉
      
      So from my pov your friend is right from a person who practice the Dharma and is not yet very familiar with letting go negative emotions, if a person is more familiar with letting go emotions, such a method as described is not much needed any more. It all depends on the situation, capacity, skills etc of both involved parties what is best. Though Dharma scriptures might not explain all things, they form the basis to understand even unexplained or unwritten Dharmas …

      I assume he has no idea what karma really is. Karma means action. Karma has mainly three meanings: 1) action, 2) the potential/seed a completed action leaves in the mind, 3) the results of the ripening of such an action as pleasant, unpleasant or neutral feelings of body and mind. The link above might help to differentiate this topic more, also Je Tsongkhapa’s Lam Rim Chen Mo is very useful to understand Karma. Without proper understanding of the principle you have no basis to validly criticize it because what you attack as wrong is just your own misunderstanding but not what Buddha/we as Buddhists talk or try to talk about karma.
      
      Many Westerners, including Western Buddhists, and also many leftists misunderstand karma as a justification of injustice or a punishment but this is wrong and simplistic.
      
      What your friend writes about karma is – to put it nicely – adventuresome 😉
      Of course Karma that is ripening at the time of death (throwing karma) leads you to either higher or lower rebirth but again this is no punishment but just cause and effect, a mechanism, that unfolds and determines the next existence. Both, the priest or the warrior (to use the words of your friend) can go to higher or lower rebirth at the time of death just based on what mind state they have at the time where the karma of the next rebirth ripens. The warrior can go to a higher rebirth, and the priest to a lower, there is no pervasion, it just depends on certain factors at the time of death. The only thing which is seen as being sure: if positive karma ripens at the time of death: higher rebirth, if negative karma ripens: lower rebrith.
      
      Anyway, this noxious concept was brought to the west by the Theosophists
      
      Here we go. The source of his misunderstanding seem to be Theosophists. But to claim they would have understood the idea of Buddhism might be like asking a right wing, facist person to explain communism. They see it through their lenses and it will be rare that they can give a valid account of the point of view of the other party. The Theosophists where mentally caught in superstition and mystics and self-importance, I wouldn’t consider them to be valid sources of information.       I think for me there is no need to read more details of what your friend said on FB, if he didn’t understand the basic principles his whole mental building “about Karma” will be wrong because it has no basis. I think there is no need to go into more details – except this would be of help for you and if what I answered does not satisfy you.

I passed on some of what you have said but I am still looking for an explanation of what karma truly means, that I can pass on to my friend to help dispel his misunderstanding – he says so far I have fallen short of providing a proper explanation that he can understand. You mention a link that might help to differentiate the topic – not sure what link you mean?

        To understand karma first your friend should read the section on Karma by Je Tsongkhapa in his Lam Rim Chen Mo.
        Karma is a complex topic. It is best to read some reliable texts about it. There might be also texts by the Theravada school.
        I rely mainly on Abhidharmakosha by Vasubandu & Je Tsongkhapa’ Great Lamrim Text.

        And also, Linda, unlike much of Buddhist thought, karma is something that relies a lot on faith– not something that can be proven– though scientists are finding some places in genetics where karma might find a nitch. And Tenzin’s right, it’s a complex topic. Don’t they say that only a Buddha can understand the workings of karma properly?

        Karma can be proven according to Buddhism by analysis. Though it is a hidden object, faith into its valid existence can be created by realizing the Buddha as valid source of information. It is true, that only a Buddha can understand karma in all aspects, nevertheless it can also be understood by logic (analysis/investigation). An object of faith should be something existent, qualities or (and existent) potential.

Greetings Tenpel. Thank you for your words of wisdom. I hope I have not offended anyone with my statement. As an ex NKT, I have needed to reflect and try to make sense of my time with them. One of my ways on how to come to terms with it was to accept it as Karma acting out. I to accrued karma by being with them and perhaps did not express myself very well. I also appreciate the blog as a means to come to terms with my time in NKT and as way of preventing beings from entering the NKT. My sincerest apologies to any I may have offended.

  Greetings, Yeshe Tsomo. I agree with you, I also see it as my karma to have met NKT and to have been misled. I must have done similar things in the past!
  
  I had a dream after I left the group. In that dream I came to a door. At the door there was a strange dog, my gut feeling warned me, something wrong here. But I was driven to enter. Then suddenly the door closed and the dog and other dogs started to chase me, trying to bite/harm me. I tried to run away and to hide myself. At a moment of being able to hide myself in the garden, I saw many of my other friends (who were caught in the NKT). I tried to communicate with them: we have to get out of here, it is not as it appears it is a dangerous and wrong place. But no one listened. Then I realized: they do not understand me, because they don’t see, their karma is not yet ripe to see. So what ever I do, is going to be senseless talk (with not any positive effect) because until their karma is exhausted to be in that fenced, dangerous garden with those aggressive dogs, they cannot escape or even understand their situation.
  
  Then I tried to leave the place but suddenly I was faced with a very powerful being (something like a mixture of a human and a bulldog), then I tried to cultivate a certain type of thought being taught in the Dharma, and that being could read my mind. He laughed and multiplied himself endlessly in all directions laughing: there is no escape! Then I cultivated that thought even stronger and suddenly all of these manifestations of him disappeared. He changed too and became more friendly, relaxed, and he guided my to a building which I had to go through to find an exit. In that building there were classes and very aggressive teachers told harshly their students certain things (like in a communist reeducation camp). I wanted to share the powerful thought that helped me to get out of this place to those people in the class rooms, so that they can also leave the horrible spot, but while thinking it, I realized deeply: they won’t understand. They cannot understand. It is not yet time for them to understand. Their situation for a change is not yet ripe. I can do nothing for them.
  
  In the last class which I passed before I left the building the students had to repeat endlessly: “All things come through the power of the mind! Them mind is the most powerful force.” After I passed that class I was free.
  
  Next day I was thinking about the dream and the friends I left behind and I found the dream very helpful: I have to accept, that I cannot do anything for those who are not yet ripe to see and to understand. Their time has still to come, it is not in my hands. This was very helpful for me to accept to have left so many friends behind. I also understood that the initial force to enter the door ignoring my gut feeling was due to the power of karma, no way not to enter this cruel place. My karma ripening impelled me to enter it.

Greetings Tenpel, Thank you for reminding of a dream I had soon after I left.
I dreamt that I went to a place that was full of thick gelatinous mud. Lots of people were stuck in it. It was very overcast and very heavy atmosphere. They all were trying to free themselves. Oddly enough I had the ability to walk on top of the mud and not sink. A friend of mine was in there trying to get out. One who had recently died. I got to them and was able to guide them out, this person was the only one out of many hundreds, that I was able to help.I was so happy to be able to assist him, I woke up then. That dream was so real that I initially thought that I had gone to a hell realm! I think that dream was my turning point on the road to recovery from the NKT. It enabled me to realise that I could continue on the bhuddist path. There have been other dreams, but that one was so pertinent to me. Thank you for your wonderful words of wisdom and for reminding me that this path is so worthwhile. With deepest respect, Yeshe Tsomo
