Overview

If one were to summarize the Buddha’s teaching in one word, we would have to say that it is universal interdependence, of which nonviolence is a natural consequence. Since we are all dependent on each other and all other beings want to be happy and not suffer, just as I do, my personal happiness and suffering are inextricably linked with those of others. This nonviolence does not mean weakness or passivity. It is the deliberate choice of altruism in all our thoughts and actions, so that it becomes inconceivable to knowingly harm others.

And how is cleaning of the body threefold?
Concerning this, one abandons killing, lays aside the rod and the knife; one lives gently, kindly and feeling compassion towards every living being.
One abandons stealing the property of another, whether in the jungle or the village; things not given, one does not steal.
One abandons sexual misconduct. One has no intercourse with girls under the guardianship of mother, father, brother, sister or relatives, with girls lawfully protected, already pledged to a husband, those undergoing punishment or those dressed with flowers and pledged to be married.

Yes, Kalamas, it is proper that you have doubt, that you have perplexity, for a doubt has arisen in a matter which is doubtful. Now, look you Kalamas, do not be led by reports, or tradition, or hearsay. Be not led by the authority of religious texts, nor by mere logic or inference, nor by considering appearances, nor by the delight in speculative opinions, nor by seeming possibilities, nor by the idea: ‘this is our teacher’. But, O Kalamas, when, you know for yourselves that certain things are unwholesome (akusala), and wrong, and bad, then give them up . . . And when you know for yourselves that certain things are wholesome (kusala) and good, then accept them and follow them. – Buddha (Kalama Sutta)

The truth is the first victim in any war. But the difference is that social media has fueled the propaganda to an extent that we never thought possible. The social networks are great channels of information. But now we learn that they also open up fantastic ways to distort information. And that is hard for most people to understand. – Michael Lynch

The wanton destruction of the seats of learning and centres of art in Tibet, and the imposition of an ideology whose sole content is hatred of everything that is not its own utopia highlights the forced impoverishment of humanity. – Herbert V. Guenther
